Questions regarding EAP and Span Based Metrics

Disclaimer: I maintain getsentry/self-hosted, therefore I know some parts of Sentry.

1. If we enable the EAP-related feature flag on sentry.conf.py, and suddenly we disable it, would that break every spans/transaction ingestion?
2. For enabling span-based metrics, do we need the EAP storage on Snuba (eap_items storage)? Or can we accomplish that without EAP?

A few months ago, I made this issue if you want to take a look on how I accomplished it: getsentry/self-hosted#3592

My goal now, is to enable span-based metrics without enabling EAP features. Problem is, I don't know whether that is possible.
