Possibly, but note naively changing the type would be a breaking change to the de facto method for plugins to deal with breaking changes.

I was thinking something like have a version_info member alongside the deprecated __version__ variable.

Only issue is that wacky rewrite to the version module in setup.py, maybe I'll just ignore that for the poc
